Arunachalesvara Temple at Tiruvannamalai represents fire among the Pancha Bhoota Stalas, its theology centred not on an image but on Arunachala hill itself, understood as Shiva manifest as a column of fire. Chola-era foundations were vastly expanded under Vijayanagara rule, producing one of Tamil Nadu's largest temple complexes with a soaring Rajagopuram and successive walled enclosures. The temple's thousand-pillared halls carry dense Vijayanagara-period narrative and equestrian carving comparable to Srirangam's. Its annual Karthigai Deepam festival, when a giant beacon is lit atop the hill visible for miles, draws millions and remains one of Tamil Nadu's largest religious gatherings, reflecting the site's continuing pull for both Shaiva pilgrims and practitioners of hill-circumambulation (giri pradakshina) associated with the sage Ramana Maharshi's nearby ashram.
