Baijnath Temple

Baijnath's Shiva temple in the Kangra valley carries a rare inscribed construction date of 1204 CE, making it one of the most securely dated Nagara-style shrines in the western Himalayas and a valuable fixed point for tracing the region's temple chronology. Dedicated to Shiva as Vaidyanath, healer of ailments, its curvilinear shikhara and richly carved mandapa exterior depict Puranic narrative panels executed in an idiom later echoed by Kangra miniature painters. Unlike many contemporaries damaged by earthquakes and invasions, the temple has remained in continuous worship for over eight centuries, giving it an unusually intact sculptural programme. It sits on the historic trade and pilgrim route linking the Kangra valley to the high Himalaya, a natural anchor for a Himachal temple circuit.
