Bhojeshwar Temple

Commissioned by the polymath Paramara king Bhoja in the early 11th century, the Bhojeshwar Temple at Bhojpur was never completed, and that incompleteness is precisely what makes it valuable to architectural historians: the earthen ramp built to haul stone blocks into place still stands beside the structure, and nearby rock faces preserve incised working drawings believed to be the mason's plans for the temple's intended elevation. Its monolithic linga, standing over two metres on an unusually large stepped platform, is among the largest such icons in India and would have anchored a temple on a scale comparable to Bhoja's other ambitious projects, including the Bhojtal lake engineering works in nearby Bhopal. Partially dressed stone blocks lying in situ show tooling marks frozen mid-process, giving visitors a working cross-section of 11th-century Nagara temple construction rarely visible at completed sites. Its popular nickname, 'the Somnath of the East,' reflects local tradition rather than any direct architectural link to Gujarat's Somnath.
