Chhatarpur Temple

Chhatarpur Temple, begun in 1974 under the ascetic Baba Sant Nagpal Ji and expanded continuously since, is a sprawling white-marble complex on the southern edge of Delhi that ranks among India's largest temple precincts by land area. Rather than following a single regional tradition, its planners combined a South Indian-style gopuram gateway with North Indian marble shikharas and multiple freestanding shrines to different deities across roughly 70 acres, functioning as a showcase of pan-Indian temple vocabulary assembled within one modern complex. As with Akshardham nearby, its interest for art-history travellers lies in observing how contemporary temple builders selectively borrow and recombine historical regional forms rather than in any single element's antiquity, and it remains a major living pilgrimage site for Delhi's Shakti devotees.
