Gangaikondacholisvarar Temple

Built by Rajendra I to commemorate his campaign to the Ganges and to found a new capital, Gangaikondacholisvarar Temple deliberately echoes and refines his father's Thanjavur temple. The vimana is subtly curved rather than straight-sided, giving it a softer profile, and the stone carving throughout is considered even more accomplished, particularly the large Chandesa-anugrahamurti panel. Part of the UNESCO Great Living Chola Temples inscription, the site once anchored a full royal capital that has since vanished, leaving the temple standing alone amid paddy fields. Its relative remoteness has kept crowds thin and stone surfaces legible, making it a favourite among architectural historians comparing Chola-era design evolution across a single generation.
