Gorakhnath Temple

The Gorakhnath Temple in Gorakhpur is the principal seat of the Nath yogi monastic order founded by the medieval yogi-saint Guru Gorakhnath, whose teachings shaped hatha yoga and Nath sampradaya practice across North India and Nepal. The temple maintains an akhand dhuni, an eternal fire said to have burned continuously since the order's founding, and functions as much as a living monastic institution and pilgrim seat as a static monument, distinguishing it from the classical stone temples elsewhere in this batch. The present buildings have been extensively rebuilt in the 20th century, so architectural interest is secondary to institutional and yogic-lineage history; an on-site museum houses manuscripts and artefacts relating to the Nath tradition, making the complex most valuable to travellers interested in the history of Indian yoga and monastic orders rather than temple architecture per se.
