Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple
Ghrishneshwar Temple, Verul
The smallest and geographically last of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines, Grishneshwar sits barely a kilometre from the Ellora Caves and shares the same basalt geology that gave that site its rock-cut monuments. Its current structure dates to the 1730s, rebuilt in red basalt under the patronage of the Holkar queen Ahilyabai, a major temple patron across central India whose reconstructions also touched Kashi Vishwanath and other major shrines after earlier medieval structures were damaged. The temple's five-tiered shikhara and pillared assembly hall carry both Shaiva imagery centred on the linga and Dashavatara panels reflecting the syncretic devotional culture typical of Maratha-era rebuilding. Its compact scale and unpretentious carving contrast deliberately with the scale of Ellora next door, but its status as a Jyotirlinga makes it a mandatory stop for pilgrims tracing that particular circuit across the subcontinent.
