Gundicha Temple

Built in the Eastern Ganga period as the ceremonial 'garden house' of the Jagannath cult, the Gundicha Temple stands about three kilometres from the main Puri temple and is architecturally simpler, its significance lying in ritual function rather than sculptural ambition. Once a year during Rath Yatra, the deities of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are drawn here in massive chariots and reside for nine days before returning, reenacting a symbolic journey to Krishna's aunt's home. The walled compound, orchard grounds and elephant gate frame this singular event, drawing crowds that rival the main temple's during festival season. Outside Rath Yatra the temple is quieter, valued by visitors for understanding the fuller ritual geography of the Jagannath tradition beyond the main shrine itself.
