Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple

Guruvayur is one of Kerala's most visited Krishna shrines, its low-slung copper-roofed sanctum a study in Kerala's distinct regional temple idiom, quite unlike the soaring gopurams of Tamil Nadu. A fire in 1970 destroyed part of the historic structure, since carefully rebuilt following traditional Kerala craft methods and mural techniques. The temple's daily ritual calendar, including elaborate elephant processions during the Guruvayur Ekadasi and Utsavam festivals, reflects an unusually intact devotional culture centred on Krishna as an infant and child deity. Its associated elephant sanctuary at Punnathur Kotta, historically used to house temple elephants, has become an attraction in its own right, reinforcing the temple's role as the devotional and cultural anchor of central Kerala.
