Jagannath Temple

Built by the Eastern Ganga king Anantavarman Chodaganga in the 12th century and expanded by his successors, the Jagannath Temple is a defining monument of mature Kalinga architecture, its 65-metre deul rising in a pancharatha plan above the Bay of Bengal coastline. The temple's most distinctive artistic feature is not stone but wood: the crude-featured images of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are ritually replaced in the Nabakalebara ceremony, a practice unique among major Indian temples. Sculpted friezes, the Aruna Stambha pillar relocated from Konark, and an active kitchen serving thousands daily surround the shrine. As one of the Char Dham and the site of the globally recognised Rath Yatra chariot festival, it remains one of Hinduism's most visited pilgrimage centres, non-Hindus barred from the inner sanctum.
