Jageshwar Temple Complex

Jageshwar's cluster of more than 124 stone shrines, set among ancient deodar cedars in the Kumaon hills, was built up in phases from roughly the 7th to the 14th century under Katyuri dynasty patronage, making it one of the largest concentrations of early medieval temple architecture in the Himalaya. The site allows historians to trace the evolution of Nagara shikhara form across seven centuries within a single forest enclosure, from the plain early shrines like Mrityunjaya to more elaborately carved later additions. Considered a Jyotirlinga by regional tradition, Jageshwar draws relatively modest pilgrim numbers compared to the Char Dham circuit, which has left its stonework and forest setting comparatively undisturbed and appealing to travellers seeking Himalayan temple architecture without Char Dham crowds.
