Kanaka Durga Temple, Vijayawada

Set atop Indrakiladri hill overlooking the Krishna river as it cuts through Vijayawada, the Kanaka Durga Temple enshrines a self-manifest (swayambhu) image of the goddess alongside Malleswara Swamy, a rare pairing that makes the site simultaneously a major Shakta and Shaiva pilgrimage centre. Puranic tradition holds that the hill itself is named for Indra's mythic penance here, and that Durga slew the buffalo-demon Mahishasura at this spot -- a narrative echoed each Dasara in the temple's exceptionally large Navaratri gathering, among the most attended in South India. The temple's continuous expansion through the 20th century has made it architecturally composite, but its riverside hilltop setting and unbroken ritual life keep it central to Andhra's religious geography.
