Kapilash Temple (Chandrasekhar Temple)

Attributed to the 14th-century Eastern Ganga king Narasimha Deva IV, the Chandrasekhar Temple crowns Kapilash hill in Dhenkanal district, its Kalinga-style deul reached via a long stone stairway that is itself part of the devotional experience. Subsequent centuries added ornamental gateways and structures around the core shrine, layering later stylistic influences onto the original Ganga-period architecture. A natural spring and sacred pool along the ascent route are woven into pilgrimage practice, and the hilltop setting offers sweeping views over Dhenkanal's forested terrain unusual among Odisha's mostly plains-based temple towns. It is included here as a representative hill-shrine counterpoint to the flat coastal Kalinga temples, of interest to travellers wanting Odisha's temple architecture in a dramatic natural setting.
