Lakshmi Narayan Temple Complex

The Lakshmi Narayan complex in Chamba town, founded around the 10th century by the town's legendary ruler Raja Sahil Varman and expanded by his successors over several centuries, is a group of six interlinked stone temples that together trace the evolution of Chamba's distinctive hill-Nagara style, a hybrid drawing on both Kashmiri trefoil forms and plains shikhara conventions. Several of the shikharas are capped with gilt bronze chatris rather than plain stone finials, an ornamental feature distinguishing them from Kangra valley temples nearby. Continuous patronage by the Chamba royal family across a millennium makes the complex an unusually well-documented case study in how a single dynasty's changing tastes are legible in successive additions to one temple site, and it anchors Chamba's wider reputation as a centre of Pahari miniature painting and metalwork.
