Murudeshwara Temple

Set on a rocky peninsula jutting into the Arabian Sea, Murudeshwara pairs an ancient legend -- that the Atma Linga carried by Ravana was set down here, giving the site its name -- with an emphatically modern architectural statement: a colossal seated Shiva statue nearly 37 metres tall, among the largest in the world, and a 20-storey gopuram completed in the early 2000s with an internal elevator to an observation gallery over the coastline. The combination of soaring gopuram, giant statue and dramatic seaside setting makes it one of coastal Karnataka's most photographed pilgrimage sites, though the core shrine and its sea-facing hillock carry genuine antiquity beneath the newer construction.
