Naina Devi Temple

Naina Devi occupies a ridge above the Gobind Sagar reservoir on the Sutlej river and is counted among the 51 Shaktipeethas, sites where, in the Sati myth, parts of the goddess's dismembered body are said to have fallen, here her eyes (nain). Its architecture is unremarkable compared to the carved stone temples of Kangra or Chamba, the emphasis lying instead on the shrine's place within the pan-Indian Shaktipeeth network and its role as one of the most heavily visited pilgrimage sites in Himachal Pradesh, particularly during Navratri. A 2005 stampede during a festival prompted significant rebuilding and crowd-management infrastructure, including a ropeway that now carries most visitors up the final ascent. For travellers, its primary interest is pilgrimage geography and scale rather than art history.
