Nartiang Durga Temple
Nartiang Durgabari
Established around 1500 CE under the patronage of the Jaintia kings, the Nartiang Durga Temple is counted among the 51 Shakti Peethas, its location, marking the mythic fall of Sati's left thigh, placing a classical pan-Indian Shakta pilgrimage site deep in Meghalaya's Jaintia Hills. Its brick construction reflects Bengali architectural influence carried into the hills through the Jaintia kingdom's historical ties to the plains, while its ritual life, including a history of animal sacrifice under royal patronage, reflects distinct Khasi-Jaintia tribal religious practice layered onto Shakta worship. The temple stands adjacent to the Nartiang monolith park, one of the world's largest collections of standing megaliths, erected by Jaintia clans as memorials. This pairing of Shakti Peetha and megalithic field makes Nartiang a singular stop for travellers tracing Shaktism's reach to India's Northeast frontier.
