Nellaiappar Temple

Nellaiappar Temple in Tirunelveli pairs adjoining shrines for Shiva as Nellaiappar and Parvati as Kanthimathi, linked by a connecting corridor in a planning arrangement characteristic of Pandya-era temple towns. Foundations trace to the seventh century, with substantial Pandya and later Nayak-period expansion adding the temple's musical pillars, carved from single stone blocks to produce distinct tones, and its elaborately worked Vasantha Mandapam. Sited on the Tamraparni river, the temple's ritual calendar has historically tracked the region's agricultural cycle, reflecting the deep integration of temple and farming economy in the far south.
