Ramappa Temple (Rudreshwara)

Inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2021 -- the only Telangana site so recognised -- the Ramappa Temple takes its popular name from Ramappa, the sculptor who signed his work here, an unusual attribution of individual authorship for the period. Kakatiya engineers built the temple on a sandbox foundation of sand, jaggery and porous mortar that allows the structure to absorb seismic shock, and used low-density fired bricks in the superstructure that famously float on water, reducing the roof's dead load. Its black basalt bracket figures achieve a polish approaching a mirror finish, a hallmark of Kakatiya lapidary skill unmatched elsewhere in the region. Set beside the Ramappa lake amid forested countryside, it remains structurally sound after more than 800 years, including recorded earthquakes.
