Ranakpur Jain Temple
Chaumukha Temple, Ranakpur · Dharana Vihara
Commissioned in the 15th century under merchant Dharna Shah with the patronage of Mewar's Rana Kumbha, Ranakpur is the largest Jain temple complex in Rajasthan and a defining example of the chaumukha, or four-faced, plan, in which the sanctum's image of Adinatha faces all four cardinal directions simultaneously. Its interior is carried almost entirely by 1,444 sculpted marble pillars, traditionally said to be no two identical, arranged so that natural light filters through multiple courtyards into a vast columned hall rather than a series of enclosed chambers. The carving ranges from geometric and floral bands to figural narrative panels, executed with a precision comparable to the more famous Dilwara temples but on a considerably larger architectural scale. Still an active pilgrimage site secluded in a forested valley of the Aravallis, Ranakpur is frequently paired with Dilwara on Jain heritage itineraries through southern Rajasthan.

- Light-filled, multi-storeyed interior achieved through a dense forest of columns rather than solid walls
