Ranganathaswamy Temple

Set on an island in the Kaveri river, Ranganathaswamy is reckoned the largest functioning Hindu temple complex on earth, its seven walled enclosures and 21 gopurams the product of continuous building from Chola foundations through Vijayanagara and Nayak expansion. The Sesharayar Mandapa's rearing horse-and-rider pillars, carved by Vijayanagara-trained sculptors after the Delhi Sultanate raids of the 14th century, are considered among the finest equestrian stone carving in India. One of the 108 Divya Desams sacred to Vaishnavism, the temple's reclining Ranganatha image and its layered architectural history make it essential for understanding how South Indian temple-building evolved across successive dynasties on a single site.
