Samaleswari Temple

Samlei Temple · Samaleswari Devi Temple

OtherTraditionally dated to the Chauhan rulers of Sambalpur, present structure much renovatedSamaleswari (a form of the goddess Durga/Shakti)

Traditionally associated with the Chauhan rulers who governed the Sambalpur kingdom, the Samaleswari Temple has been rebuilt and expanded across successive centuries, its current shikhara superstructure a comparatively recent addition over an older shrine core. As tutelary deity of western Odisha's Kosali cultural region, the goddess draws worship practices that blend classical Shakta ritual with local tribal traditions distinct from coastal Odisha's Jagannath-centred devotion. Set on the banks of the Mahanadi with an adjoining bathing ghat, the temple functions as the devotional anchor of Sambalpur city and the wider Western Odisha pilgrimage circuit. It is included here as a regional counterpoint to the Bhubaneswar-Puri temple cluster, of primary interest to visitors extending a tour into western Odisha's textile and tribal-heritage circuit.
