Shikharji, also called Sammed or Sammet Shikharji, stands on Parasnath hill in Giridih district, the highest mountain in Jharkhand, and is the most important pilgrimage site in Jainism. Twenty of the twenty-four Tirthankaras are believed to have attained moksha here, along with a great number of monks, which places it first among the seven principal tirthas, ahead of Girnar, Pawapuri, Champapuri, Dilwara, Palitana and Ashtapad. The pilgrimage is not a single temple but a circuit of small summit shrines known as tonks, each marking the liberation of a particular Tirthankara, walked as one continuous route of roughly twenty-seven kilometres. Pilgrims commonly set out well before dawn to complete it in a day, and the hill is revered by Svetambara and Digambara alike.
