Mahabalipuram Shore Temple
Standing directly on the Bay of Bengal shoreline, the Shore Temple is among the earliest structural stone temples in South India, completed under Pallava king Narasimhavarman II around the same period as Kanchipuram's Kailasanathar. Its two Shiva towers flank an earlier, smaller Vishnu shrine, an unusual sequential layout that reflects the site's building history. Continuous sea-salt exposure has worn its granite reliefs smoother than inland Pallava monuments, yet the silhouette remains one of the most photographed in Indian temple architecture. Part of the UNESCO-listed Mahabalipuram Group of Monuments, it sits alongside the rock-cut Pancha Rathas and the giant open-air relief Arjuna's Penance, together forming the foundational chapter of Dravida stone architecture before it matured into Chola-era temple building.
