Srisailam Mallikarjuna Temple
Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple
Perched on the Nallamala hills above a gorge of the Krishna river, Srisailam holds the rare distinction of being both a Jyotirlinga (one of Shiva's twelve primary light-manifestations) and a Shakti Peetha (one of the goddess's fifty-one power-seats), making it one of the subcontinent's most theologically layered pilgrimage sites. Reddi-dynasty and later Vijayanagara patrons fortified and expanded the complex between the 14th and 16th centuries, adding compound walls carved with reliefs of the Mahabharata's Kiratarjuniya episode, in which Arjuna battles Shiva disguised as a hunter. Its remote forest setting, now within a tiger reserve, adds a wilderness dimension uncommon among South India's major temple towns.
