Sukhothai Historical Park

Sukhothai Historical Park covers the ruins of Sukhothai, capital of the Sukhothai kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries, and is inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Within the old walls and moat stand the remains of some two hundred temples and monuments, among them Wat Mahathat, the principal royal temple, and Wat Si Chum, whose narrow brick mondop is almost entirely filled by the seated Buddha known as Phra Achana. Sukhothai is regarded as the period in which a distinctly Thai artistic idiom emerged, including the lotus-bud chedi and the walking Buddha, both of which appear here before anywhere else.
