Taratarini Temple
Tara Tarini Shakti Peeth
Perched on Kumari Hills above the Rushikulya River, Tara Tarini is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of the subcontinent, marking, in the tradition's geography, the spot where Sati's breasts fell. The presiding images are twin aniconic stone reliefs rather than fully modelled goddess sculptures, worshipped through a tribal-inflected Shakta ritual tradition that predates the temple's current built form, largely a product of 19th- and 20th-century renovation over an older sacred site. The hilltop location, reachable by ropeway as well as a steep flight of steps, and its riverside setting give it a distinct pilgrimage character from Odisha's stone-temple towns. It draws primarily devotional rather than architecture-focused visitors, best paired with the Ganjam coastal circuit.
