Thousand Pillar Temple, Warangal
Rudreshwara Swamy Temple, Hanamkonda
Built in 1163 by the Kakatiya king Rudra Deva at Hanamkonda near Warangal, this Trikutalayam (triple-shrine) temple unites Shiva, Vishnu and Surya around a single star-shaped platform, a comparatively rare triple dedication reflecting Kakatiya religious inclusiveness in the dynasty's formative period, predating their later, larger Ramappa temple. Its name derives from a dense forest of finely carved pillars supporting the mandapa, worked in the polished Vesara idiom the Kakatiyas inherited from Chalukya predecessors and refined further. A 19th-century earthquake destroyed much of the superstructure, but the surviving pillared halls and a monolithic black basalt Nandi -- polished to the same mirror sheen seen at Ramappa -- preserve the temple's sculptural quality despite the structural loss.
