Tirumala Venkateswara Temple

Tirupati Balaji Temple · Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple

DravidaFoundational shrine c. 9th century CE, expanded through Chola, Vijayanagara and later dynastiesVishnu (as Venkateswara / Balaji)

The wealthiest and most-visited pilgrimage site on Earth by daily footfall, Tirumala's hilltop temple to Venkateswara has drawn continuous royal and popular patronage since at least the 9th century, with major expansion under the Cholas and, especially, the Vijayanagara emperors -- Krishnadevaraya's donor statues still stand at the entrance as testament. The gold-clad Ananda Nilayam vimana crowns a sanctum whose black-stone image is bathed in centuries of accumulated ritual and legend. Layer upon layer of inscriptions record a millennium of unbroken endowment from successive South Indian dynasties, making the temple as much a historical archive as an active shrine. Its hair-tonsure tradition and laddu prasadam are globally recognised markers of the pilgrimage.
