Udayagiri Caves
Udayagiri Rock-Cut Caves, Vidisha
Udayagiri is the single most important surviving group of Gupta-period rock-cut shrines, carved directly into a sandstone hill near Vidisha under the patronage of Chandragupta II in the early 5th century. Its Varaha panel, showing Vishnu's boar incarnation lifting the earth goddess from the cosmic ocean while a host of sages and deities look on, is treated in Indian art history as a foundational statement of Gupta classical style — the point where craftsmen decisively resolved anatomical naturalism with narrative complexity. Unlike the sculptural exuberance of Khajuraho, Udayagiri's caves are austere and directly hewn into rock rather than freestanding, with minimal ornamentation letting the relief carving carry full expressive weight. Several caves carry precise dated inscriptions, making the site an anchor point for dating other Gupta monuments. Its mixed Vaishnava, Shaiva, and Jain dedications reflect the religious pluralism of the Gupta court.
