Lokeshwara Temple

Dravida745 CE, Chalukya dynasty (Queen Lokamahadevi)Shiva (as Virupaksha)UNESCO World Heritage

Built around 745 CE by Queen Lokamahadevi to celebrate her husband Vikramaditya II's victory over the Pallavas of Kanchipuram, the Virupaksha Temple is the largest and best-preserved structure at Pattadakal, a UNESCO World Heritage complex where Chalukya architects tested both northern Nagara and southern Dravida forms within a single temple town -- the clearest surviving evidence of this stylistic cross-pollination anywhere in India. Its plan and sculptural programme consciously echo the Kailasanatha at Kanchipuram, complete with narrative friezes of the Ramayana and Mahabharata lining the mandapa. A Kannada inscription by the architect Gundan Anivaritachari, naming himself, survives on site -- a rare instance of an artisan's signed authorship in this period.

Art & Architecture

  • Commissioned to commemorate a Chalukya military victory over the Pallavas, modelled directly on Kanchipuram's Kailasanatha
  • Elaborately carved gopuram-style gateway and a pillared hall with Ramayana and Mahabharata narrative panels
  • Monolithic Nandi pavilion facing the sanctum across an open court
  • Part of a UNESCO ensemble where Nagara and Dravida styles stand side by side, evidencing deliberate architectural experimentation
