Vitthala Temple
The most architecturally ambitious of Hampi's Vijayanagara-era temples, Vittala was never fully consecrated -- construction halted after the empire's catastrophic 1565 defeat at Talikota -- yet its unfinished state preserves an extraordinary showcase of workshop technique. The stone chariot facing the main shrine, complete with a Garuda seated within and wheels that could once genuinely turn, has become the visual shorthand for Hampi itself. The Ranga Mantapa's slender granite pillars are tuned to produce different musical notes when tapped, a feat of acoustic stone-carving debated by conservators keen to prevent further wear. Part of the UNESCO-listed Group of Monuments at Hampi, it sits within the former Vijayanagara royal centre on the Tungabhadra's banks.
